Miami
solidified its title of The Team of the 80s"
with its third national championship in seven years by handing
Alabama a 33-25 defeat in the USF&G Sugar Bowl. Miami
drove 66 yards to score first. Alabama would drive the field
to tie the score 7-7. The 'Canes took just five plays bring
it to 13-7. The Tide would then come back to make it 13-10
with a field goal. Miami again would respond, this time by
running nine straight times including a touchdown run to make
the score 20-10. Alabama scored again late in the 1st half
to close the gap to 20-17. Miami's stand out Tight End, Rob
Chudzinski, scored first in the 2nd half on an 11-yard touchdown
catch from Erickson. The lead became 26-17. After a Charles
Pharms interception the 'Canes drove 88-yards. Randy Bethel
capped the drive off with a 12-yard touchdown reception. The
score was now 33-17. The Tide made it look close at 33-25,
with a late touchdown and two-point conversion. The 'Canes
were voted National Champs again and Dennis Erickson became
only the second coach in NCAA history to win a national championship
